Biography

Jean-Paul Gasparian

Jean-Paul released his sixth album in September 2024, his second for the Naïve label. Entirely devoted to Armenian music, Origins was awarded a Diapason d'Or and received praise from the international press ("A Musician of Enormous Imagination" – Gramophone). In 2023, his Debussy album was selected as one of the twelve best classical recordings of the year by Crescendo magazine. His previous albums, devoted to Rachmaninoff and Chopin, had already been enthusiastically received ("Un Nouveau Coup de Maître" – Le Figaro, "A Highly Accomplished Chopinist" – BBC Music Magazine).

In February 2020, Jean-Paul won the Thierry Scherz Prize at the Som-mets Musicaux de Gstaad, which earned him a recording contract with the Bern Symphony Orchestra for the Claves label, including Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Arno Babadjanian's Heroic Ballad.

Jean-Paul has been nominated for the 2021 Victoires de la Musique Classique awards in the category of Best New Instrumental Soloist.

In May 2022, Jean-Paul made his debut at the Philharmonie de Paris, performing as a soloist with the Orchestre National d'Ile-de-France. In May 2023, he performed the French premiere of Howard Shore's piano concerto, Ruin and Memory, at the Maison de la Radio, accompanied by the Philharmonique de Radio France.

Jean-Paul won the prestigious European Competition in Bremen ( Germany) in 2014, as well as theJosé Iturbi International Competition( Spain) in 2015, and the GPIPL in Lyon ( France) and Hastings ( England) in 2013. He won the Cziffra Foundation Prize in 2014 and became a laureate of the Fondation l'Or du Rhin in October 2016.

He was awarded the 1st Prize in Philosophy at the Concours Général des Lycéens de France in 2013.

Among the orchestras that have accompanied him as a soloist are: Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National d'Ile-de-France, Nürnberger Symphoniker, Bremer Philharmoniker, Berner Symphonie-orchester, Robert Schumann Philharmonic, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Deutsche Philharmonie Merck, Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de la Región de Murcia, Montenegrin Symphony Orchestra, RTS Symphony Orchestra, Rouen Opera Orchestra, Orchestre Colonne, Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse, Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National d'Avignon, and many others.

In January 2018 he replaced the renowned pianist Christian Zacharias at short notice in Mozart's 24th Concerto under the direction of the great Austrian conductor Leopold Hager at the Stadthalle in Chemnitz.

Jean-Paul has performed in recital or with orchestra at the Philharmonie de Paris, Salle Gaveau, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Auditorium de la Maison de la Radio, Tonhalle in Zurich, Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg, Die Glocke in Bremen, Mozarteum in Salzburg, Salle Flagey in Brussels, Kolarac in Belgrade, Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall in Yerevan, and at festivals such as La Roque d'Anthéron, Radio France Festival in Montpellier, La Folle Journée in Nantes, Festival de Menton, Un Violon sur le Sable, Piano aux Jacobins, Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo, Lisztomanias, Les Flâneries de Reims, Nohant Chopin Festival, Festival de Saint-Denis, Colmar International Festival, Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, Piano à Saint-Ursanne, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Kissinger Sommer Festival, and Klavier-Festival Ruhr.

In addition, the Festival Chopin de Nohant has published an archive album dedicated to Aldo Ciccolini, in which is included Schumann's Sonata in G minor recorded live by Jean-Paul Gasparian (2015 edition). Classica Magazine awarded the album its Choc du Mois and placed Jean-Paul among the 10 most promising pianists of the young generation.

Born in Paris in 1995 to musician parents, Jean-Paul Gasparian was unanimously admitted to the Paris Conservatory (CNSM) at the age of 14, where he brilliantly obtained his Master's degree in 2015. His teachers were Olivier Gardon, Jacques Rouvier, Michel Béroff, and Laurent Cabasso. After completing postgraduate studies at the CNSMDP with Michel Dalberto and Claire Désert, as well as at the Royal College of Music in London with Vanessa Latarche (Artist Diploma), he continued his training with Elisso Virsaladze in Italy. For several years, he has also received regular guidance from Tatiana Zelikman during masterclasses abroad.

Jean-Paul is artist in residence at the Singer-Polignac Foundation, an alumnus of the Lieven Piano Foundation, and a laureate of the Banque Populaire Foundation and the Villecroze Music Academy. He has also been a Steinway Artist since the summer of 2017.
